The Crystal (Krystallen) is one of Copenhagen’s most iconic office buildings. Named “Building of The Year 2011” by Archdaily with architecture by Schmidt Hammer Lassen.

I was inside the amazing Nykredit building yesterday and had a chance to visit from top to toe. Great view to the city and habour of Copenhagen - e.g. from the cantina where employees can enjoy lunch while enjoying the view. Acoustics are remarkably good everywhere despite the open layer with two atria. The disposition of the plan allows the accommodation of open plan, separate offices or meeting rooms - all with great flexibility thanks to intelligent interior design and technical features.

It’s one of the most sustainable buildings in Copenhagen - with an exceptionally low energy-consumption at 70 kWh per square metro  The roof is covered with highly efficient photovoltaic panels generating 80,000 kWh per year. In addition, the triple-layered inner glass façade provides extremely effective thermal insulation.

Rainwater run-off is collected to be used as grey water for toilet facilities throughout the building, while sea water provides additional cooling for the building. Inside you find Danish designed furniture, lamps etc - and details with triangles as the major theme - inside out.

Outside it’s more or less “freestanding” resting on a single point and a single line. It floats as a visually light, crystalline structure above the plaza.

I can only recommend a visit here. I’ll be back during the summer, that’s for sure!

The Crystal by Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects. Named the Best Structural Design of the Year at last year’s LEAF Awards. It’s now office building for Nykredit (the ones with the hanging offices in the building across the street). Good for architecture hunting in Copenhagen!
