Building homes using old shipping containers as the structural framework is not just recycling. It’s upcycling! Have you seen the WorldFlexHome houses? A modular concept, using 40 feet high cube standard modules to built green houses around the world? The first one built in Frederiksværk, outside Copenhagen, was a demo house - built to demonstrate how good looking a prefabricated ‘green housing system’ can be. WorldFlexHome meets the demands in the international environment building standard, Active House. Much more on their website! #allgoodthings #danish spotted by missdesignsays.

29.04.2013: Dome of Visions, Copenhagen. A greenhouse dome at Krøyers Plads, Strandgade, Copenhagen, Denmark - by Kristoffer Tejlgaard + Benny Jepsen. Will move from Copenhagen to Aarhus by the end of May and return to Copenhagen in the late Summer. The Dome of Visions project is about putting action into words and following through on new ideas in construction and urban thinking and planning. From the website: “It’s a city planning experiment in itself as it attempts to make use of the urban space “in-between” and the temporary locations that appear when we are busy tearing down the old to make way for the new, such as Krøyers Plads. The city currently lacks these sites which give time and space for the sharing of ideas. How do we attract life and activate the city’s cultural instances? We will try to find the answers together and co-create the future of the city with the architects.”
The dome is 10,5 meters in height and has a diameter of 21 meters. The shape of the dome is inspired by American futurist and architect Buckminster Fuller who, among other things, studied minimalistic constructions and patented the geodesic dome. The dome itself acts as a façade and a shield from the elements which enables whatever construction that goes inside to use a minimal amount of materials. This is also an experiment to test the conditions and functionality of a dome when it comes to living and everyday activities.

The design is derived from the nautical swirl, a pattern repeated not only in the fluid behavior of water but throughout marine wildlife design as well, the radial shape also dictates the organization of spaces and circulation. The tentacle-like structure seems to hover over a reflecting pool, and once inside the visitor is immersed within several underwater ocean-scapes; similar to the function of a whirlpool, the project pulls the guest into the deep blue to observe the sea life.
